Georgian deputy economy minister Romeo Mikautadze on Wednesday joined European Union ministers responsible for energy at an informal meeting in Prague, with the gathering discussing the bloc’s current energy preparedness for the coming winter, electricity market reform and the challenges in the sector in general.

Speaking at the meeting, Mikautadze focused on Georgia's strategic location between Europe and Asia and noted the country was ready to contribute to Europe's energy security, the ministry of economy said on Thursday.

The minister also said Georgia had a “favourable geographical location” to successfully fulfil the function of an energy bridge, and brought up the example of the project of the Black Sea submarine transmission cable set to connect the country and the South Caucasus region to the EU energy system.

Mikoutadze also spoke about capabilities of Georgia as a country with an “important transit function” for transporting energy resources to Europe.

He said the country was aiming to further increase its transit role and contribute to a strengthening of the energy security of the European Union through the South Caucasus region.
