Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said Georgia was “ready to play its own role” in ensuring peace in the South Caucasus region “within its capabilities”.

Kobakhidze was commenting after the latest escalation of hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region overnight on Tuesday, with casualties confirmed.

The most important thing for us is to ensure peace in the region. This is our main source of pain, our main desire and task. If Georgia and Georgian authorities can play any role in this regard, of course, we are ready in every way”, the GD official said.

In his remarks over the matter, Kobakhidze stressed the “main task for everyone” should be to stop the conflict.

We said this in relation to Ukraine, and of course it is even more sensitive for us when it comes to our two neighbouring and friendly countries [Armenia and Azerbaijan]. In this regard, if we can do anything, we will certainly do everything”, he concluded.
