Women living in the village of Maradisi in Marneuli municipality of Georgia have teamed up to help their neighbour who has contracted COVID-19 and has been unable to tend her potato plantation this year.
Obeying social distancing rules and other hygiene recommendations, the women have weeded the plot, in order not to leave the family, who currently is under intensive care at the hospital, without a source of income.
"This is all we can do to help. When the family will be back from the hospital they need to have something for their livelihood", said Naira Paksadze, a community worker of TASO foundation who is engaged in a community mobilisation project of UN Women.
The amount of people under quarantine and self-isolation is increasing day by day due to the widespread new coronavirus, Covid-19, in the country, while the private sector is responding with various types of supportive activities, expressing public responsibility in defeating the virus.
A total of 10,000 GEL has been collected via a social media campaign in two days for a 73-year old man who was fined by police in Georgia’s Eastern town of Telavi for selling tulips on Palm Sunday, April 12.
A total of 128,280,000 GEL (about $40.65m/€37.10m) has already been accumulated in the StopCov fund as of April 14. The funds raised in the StopCoV fund, that was created on March 23, will be used to meet 'identified needs'. In addition to the companies, private entities have donated as well, announces the press office of the foundation.
Several days ago, 63-year-old farmer Kako Jeiranashvil from Georgia’s Eastern Kakheti region thought that thousands of the tulips he had planned to sell at the Navtlugi Market in Tbilisi, were doomed to die. As a result of the nationwide curfew amid the coronavirus outbreak, Jeiranashvili could not bring his tulips to the capital.
Georgia reported 16 new cases of coronavirus increasing the total number of cases to 582 today. A total of 207 people have recovered since February 26 when the country confirmed the first case of the COVID-19. However, two more coronavirus-related mortalities have increased the number of deaths to eight.
