External trade of Georgia down 2.7% in January-March 2020

Georgia’s external trade turnover amounted to $2.77 billion in January-March 2020, which is a decrease of 2.7 per cent compared to the same period of last year, show preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

The value of exports decreased 5.9 per cent and reached $778.2 million, while imports also decreased 1.4 per cent, amounting to $1.99 billion.

The trade deficit of Georgia in January-March 2020 amounted to $1.23 billion which is 43.9 per cent of total trade turnover.

Georgia's top trading partners

Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia  were Georgia's top trading partners in January-March 2020.

Trade turnover with Turkey reached $402.2 million, $306.2 million with Azerbaijan and $301.4 million with Russia. 

Georgia’s top exported commodities in January-March 2020 were:

  • Copper ores and concentrates - $159 million (20.4% of total exports)
  • Motor cars - $127.9 million (16.4% of total exports)
  • Ferroalloys - $58.2 million (7.5% of total exports)

Meanwhile, the top import commodities were:

  • Motor cars - $173.8 million (8.7% of total imports)
  • Petroleum and petroleum oils - $150.4 million (7.5% of total imports)
  • Petroleum gases and other gaseous - $135.5 million (6.8% of total imports)
