More awards for Georgian-German film 'Corn Island'

The Georgian director of a Georgian-German co-produced film has been honoured at an international film festival over the weekend.

At the San Marino International Film Festival Giorgi Ovashvili received the Best Director award for his efforts in Corn Island.

Furthermore, Georgian actress Mariam Buturishvili was awarded the Best Actress (Premio al Miglior attrice) award for her role in the film.

The prestigious Italian film festival was held from October 24 to November 1.

The latest awards come after a successful few months for Corn Island – the film has won a raft of top awards at a number of international film festivals recently.

Meanwhile at a French international film festival at the beginning of the month, Corn Island won four awards.

Corn Island received awards for Best Music, the audience award for the Best Film, the Critics Prize and the Grand Prize Golden Antigone at the Montpellier International Film Festival.

The Georgian drama, named Simindis Kundzuli in Georgian language, was released in September 2014. Since then it has won six prizes at various international film festivals.

It has also been selected as the Georgian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

In the past three months, Corn Island has won these awards:

  • Prestigious FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Award at the 27th Athens European Cinema Festival;
  • The Best Film of the Festival award at the 12th Tofifest International Film Festival, in Torun, Poland;
  • The Grand Prix at the Split Film Festival 2014 in Croatia;
  • Two awards – the Ecumenical Jury award and the Crystal Globe award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival;
  • The Best Cinematography Award and the Grand Prize at the Kinoshok - Open CIS and Baltic Film Festival;
  • The Grand Prize at the Split International Festival of New Film; 
  • Best Music, the audience award for the Best Film, the Critics Prize and the Grand Prize Golden Antigone at the Montpellier International Film Festival.
