October was a successful month for Georgian film Corn Island.

The Georgian-German co-production triumphed at multiple international European film festivals this month, including winning a prestigious international film critics’ choice award.

The film has been described as a poetic tale on the cycle of life told through the eyes of an old Abkhazian peasant and his teenage granddaughter.

Corn Island (Simindis Kundzuli) directed by George Ovashvili, was most recently honoured at the 27thAthens European Cinema Festival, held from October 16-26, in the Panorama section of the competition. In this festival Corn Island was awarded the prestigious FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Award.

The FIPRESCI Award, named after the Late Greek master Theo Angelopoulos, was presented to the Georgian side by his widow, film producer Phoebe Angelopoulos.

Meanwhile at the Tofifest International Film Festival, revelers chose Corn Island as the best film of the festival. This was the final award to be presented at the 12thannual festival in Torun, Poland.

In Poland the film was given an honorary mention by the professional jury in the On Air main competition. Corn Island was also appreciated by the Students Jury. Judges described the film as a "simple, subtle, but also a very beautiful film, in the true meaning of the word.”

Meanwhile, Corn Island won the Grand Prix at the Split Film Festival 2014 in Croatia earlier this year.

Throughout the year Corn Island has won four other international awards.

At the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, it received two awards – the award of Ecumenical Jury and the Crystal Globe award. At Kinoshok - Open CIS and Baltic Film Festival, Corn Island won the Best Cinematography Award and the Grand Prize. It also received the Grand Prize at the Split International Festival of New Film.
