Hadas Meitzad, the Ambassador of Israel to Georgia, on Thursday expressed her “profound gratitude” to veterans who “valiantly fought to defeat the war machinery” of Nazi Germany and fascist forces in Europe while meeting Georgian servicemembers who took part in the conflict on the anniversary of the victory.

Meitzad also paid respect to “all” who gave their lives for the “noble cause”, the Embassy of Israel said.

Around 700,000 Georgians served in World War II, and nearly 400,000 laid down their lives. We extend our endless gratitude to the veterans and heroes from Georgia. You and your descendants should carry this legacy with pride”, the diplomat said.

In the present day, as we confront a rising tide of antisemitism and racism, one can not underestimate the importance of this day and what it stands for: democracy, freedom, and tolerance should always prevail”, she added.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and other officials visited the Veterans’ Culture and Recreation Park in the capital city of Tbilisi earlier today to also pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the War.

The Government Administration said veterans of the War would receive a one-time social assistance of ₾2,000 ($747.73), while family members of those who lost their lives in the war would receive ₾1,000 ($373.86).
