The availability of Vosoritide, a medication used for treatment of achondroplasia among children patients, will be widened following an initiative by the Georgian Government, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.
The issue was discussed earlier today during a meeting of the Coordinating Council for Rare Diseases, where Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze announced a plan to enable patients to receive Vosoritide “as close to their homes as possible” at venues providing outpatient services.
Sarjveladze added the initiative was launched in coordination with the Government to “ensure the safety of patients and their interests”.
The Ministry said the medication would be available throughout Georgia, with individuals intending to take it abroad would need to do so under the supervision of “qualified medical personnel”.
The meeting of the Council also involved parents of children with the syndrome and deputy health ministers Tamar Gabunia and Irine Tsakadze.
Vosoritide has been available in Georgia since November 2023 following requests by parents of children diagnosed with the illness for state efforts to introduce the drug to the country.

Parents, demanding the Government to approve and provide an experimental drug for the treatment of achondroplasia in their children, ended their protest late on Friday, after the Council for Rare Diseases discussed guidelines and protocols for the management of achondroplasia earlier that day.
Tamar Gabunia, the Georgian Deputy Health Minister, on Monday called parents demanding Government provision of an experimental drug for treating achondroplasia to halt rallies and “return to constructive dialogue” with the body to facilitate the “complicated process” of introducing the medicine for their children.
Silviu Domente, the representative of the World Health Organisation in Georgia, on Wednesday said the introduction of Voxzogo (vosoritide), an experimental drug for treating achondroplasia, in many countries would be a “long process”, in comments on the backdrop of requests by parents in the country for the Government to introduce and finance the medication.
