Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, on Sunday expressed his satisfaction that the Georgian Government had "promptly" submitted an action plan on the implementation of the nine priorities set out by the European Commission for the country’s European Union membership candidate status to Brussels.

In his remarks on the matter, Herczynski noted the fulfilment of the nine priorities required the “constructive” cooperation of the Government and the domestic opposition.

On December 14-15, the leaders of the 27 EU member states will meet in Brussels and decide on the EU enlargement package. [...] This is a very emotional moment for me too. The European Commission has already given a positive recommendation to the European Union regarding the granting of [membership] candidate status to Georgia. I hope the 27 EU countries will make a positive decision”, Herczynski said.

The EU diplomat stressed the reforms were necessary for the accession to the European Union both at this stage and in future as well.

I am glad that government acted promptly and submitted the 9-step action plan to Brussels a few days ago. Everyone should work together to complete these nine steps, requiring inclusiveness from the government and a constructive approach from the opposition”, he concluded.

Georgia’s European integration process and the associated reforms agenda were discussed on Friday in a meeting between Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Charles Michel, the European Council President, on the sidelines of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference hosted in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Garibashvili informed Michel about the reforms already implemented by his Government on the European integration path and further noted the Government was pursuing the “successfully launched process” of implementing the recommendations set out by the bloc.
