The Georgian Defence Forces have new recruits now, who pledged their allegiance in Akhalkalaki, a town in Georgia's southern region, the Defence Ministry said on Saturday.
The recruits have gone through an eight-week Basic Combat Training Course to develop organisational, gunnery, medical and tactical skills.
They will undergo military service in the East and West Command of the Defense Forces of Georgia.
Grigol Giorgadze, the Georgian Deputy Defence Minister, on Tuesday told the Parliament the country’s new Defence Code had been developed with an “active engagement” of foreign partners, and said the document was expected to increase Georgia’s interoperability with NATO.
New recruits of the Georgian Defence Forces took their oath in 10 cities across the country to launch celebrations of Independence Day on Friday.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday announced “major changes” to the country’s defence system as part of the new defence code, which includes full transition of the compulsory military service to the Ministry of Defence mandate, requirement for the state to provide accommodation for servicemembers and their families, a “more flexible” military reserve system for students and moves to prevent evasion of service.
Today Georgia marks the 30th anniversary of the creation of its armed forces. The day is generally marked on April 30. However, due to Red Friday tomorrow, which is a day-off, the day was marked today.
The Georgian Defence Forces have 225 new servicemen now, who pledged their allegiance on Saint George's Day. The ceremony was held at the NATO-Georgia Joint Training and Evaluation Centre.
Students from universities across Georgia are being hosted in the latest season of Security School, a project by the country’s State Security Service, to learn about subjects including domestic and international threats and challenges.
