Georgia’s population increased by 1.3 percent compared to 2021 and reached 3,736,400 people as of January 1, 2023 the National Statistics Office of Georgia said on Thursday in its latest update.

The Office said demographic figures showed a negative natural increase (-6,799) and positive net migration (54,509) last year.

Figures also showed urban areas to be more populated than rural locations, with 60.4 percent of the total population found in the former and almost one third, or 1,241,700 people, in the capital city of Tbilisi.

Population by age and sex

The data revealed there were 1,793,800 men and 1,942,500 women in the country, for a ratio of 92. The Office also said the number of men exceeded that of women under the age of 35, while the opposite situation was observed for the age group of 35 and over - a tendency that could be explained by higher life expectancy for women, it noted.

Individuals aged 0-14 made up 20.7 percent of the total population, while the age group of 15-64 comprised 63.8 percent. Those aged 65 and above represented 15.6 percent of the population.

Life expectancy

Average life expectancy was observed at 73.7 years - an increase of 2.3 units compared to the previous year. For men the number stood at 69.4 years, while for women it was 78.1 years.

The median age of the population stood at 38 years in the latest examination of figures.

Migration

There were 125,269 emigrants (+25.% y/y) and 179,778 immigrants (+142.9% y/y) in 2022, with 84.3 percent of immigrants and 86.7 percent of emigrants representing the working-age segment of the population - those aged between 15-64.

In numbers reflecting nationality, 30.3 percent of immigrants and 80.5 percent of emigrants were citizens of Georgia.
