Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday said the country remained an “island of peace” on the backdrop of security challenges in the region and maintained an “important function” as a conductor of alternative energy supplies.

Papuashvili made the comments during his ongoing visit to Japan, saying amid the “difficult times and with security challenges in the region” his country maintained an “important function” in connecting Europe and Asia.

The Georgian official noted Europe was working to find alternative sources of energy in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine - a process he said gave Georgia a role as a corridor for the deliveries.

In comments on his visit to Tokyo, Papuashvili noted large Japanese companies were focused on deepening economic cooperation with Georgia, in particular in the direction of renewable energy sources.

“Today, our delegation had meetings with Japanese business representatives, including companies investing in Georgia”, he said.

There is interest from Japanese companies in participating more in renewable energy, and this is encouraging given the experience that Japan has from the innovative and technological achievements and approaches it has accumulated over the years”, the parliament speaker added.
