Georgia’s Agriculture Ministry on Friday dismissed fears for wheat flour shortage in the country following comments on the expected halt of wheat processing facilities due to suspension of wheat imports.

The Ministry said there were “no grounds” for a shortage in flour on the local market as flour imports had solved the issue with wheat import shortages.

The statement also acknowledged the issues with wheat imports due to increased prices in recent months, but added the start of the harvest season in the coming months would effect a reduction in the dynamic of the prices.

Levan Silagava, the Executive Director of the Georgian Wheat and Flour Producers Association, said earlier on Friday “all mills” throughout the country would cease operation “in the coming days” due to shortage of wheat reserves and “no orders made for imports”.
