The Czech Republic will “do its utmost” during the country’s European Union Presidency to support the Associated Trio countries of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in a “fast-track” EU membership, Miloš Vystrčil, the President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic said on Tuesday.

The high official, on his official visit to Georgia, also said his country was maintaining support for the Eastern Partnership, which the Associated Trio format was launched last year to support.

The EaP itself was launched by the EU in 2009 and originally unified Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine in their partnership with the Union and in support of democracy and stability in Eastern Europe.

Belarus suspended its participation in the EaP following the economic sanctions imposed by the EU against the country last year for “violence against peaceful protesters, intimidation, arbitrary arrests and detentions” following the presidential elections in August 2020.

During his visit to Georgia, Vystrčil met the country's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili and Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili.
