The unemployment rate in Georgia increased by 0.9% compared to 2019 and amounted to 18.5% in 2020, show data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
In the reporting period the economically active population was made up by 50.5% of the working age population (population aged 15 and older).
The economic activity rate declined 1.3 percentage points, while the employment rate declined by 1.5 percentage points compared to 2019. The economic activity rate in urban settlements increased by 0.3 percentage points, while it decreased by 2.6 percentage points in rural settlements year-on-year", says Geostat.
Overall, the employment rate in urban as well as in rural areas decreased by 1.3 and 1.8 percentage points respectively.
Last year the unemployment rate increased in Tbilisi (3.8%), Kvemo Kartli (2.8%) and Adjara (1.1%) regions.
Traditionally, the unemployment rate is higher for men than for women. In 2020, this indicator was increased for women by 0.2 percentage points, while it increased by 1.3 percentage points for men", says Geostat.
However, the economic activity rate is higher for men than for women.
In 2020 the economic activity rate for women was 40.4%, while for men it was 62%. In the same period, the activity rate for women decreased by 2.7%, while it increased by 0.3% for men year-on-year.
