Nearly 2,000 employees of the Rustavi Azot chemical plant in Rustavi, a town 20km south of the capital Tbilisi, are on strike.

Workers are demanding an increase of their salaries of 50% after stoppin the functioning of the plant yesterday as part of their protest.

Production of ammonium nitrate and sodium cyanide which are the basic products of the plant has been suspended. The strikers do not allow trucks to take out the goods from the plant.

About 300 employees of the plant went on strike on April 27 with a main demand of the management to increase their salaries by 50%. After the administration refused to fulfill this request the rest employees of the plant joined the protesters.

The administration says that it is impossible to increase the salaries by 50% at this stage.
