The trial of 7 people detained during rallies near the buildings of district election commissions is underway at Tbilisi City Court.
Lasha Tkesheladze, the lawyer of two detainees Nika Kvitatiani and Giorgi Pkhaladze, commented for the press:
These people were illegally detained. Yesterday the public saw very well that they were within the scope of freedom of expression, within the force of constitution and that police officers should not have detained them. Our only expectation is that these people should be out and the court should not legitimize the injustices that the police committed yesterday.”
Yesterday protest rallies were held while complaints lodged with the district election commissions in Tbilisi and several regions of Georgia were being considered. There have been several confrontations between law enforcers and protesters during the ongoing rallies in Tbilisi.
In total 12 people have been detained at rallies for disobedience to law enforcers or hooliganism.
Nine people, including the three opposition United Georgia party members, have been detained during the clashes with police at the Saburtalo and Isani district election commissions (DECs) in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. Opposition politicians and their supporters have gathered at various DECs in Tbilisi and regions where the election administration is reviewing the election-related appeals.
Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze says attacking the October 31 parliamentary election results is first of all in Russia’s interests and asks the public once again to think about it.
District election commissions have received 1,561 appeals as of now related to the parliamentary elections held on October 31 in Georgia, said Head of Human Resources Department at the Central Election Commission (CEC) Giorgi Kalandarishvili.
Twenty-five local NGOs, including Transparency International Georgia, Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association and International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, have said in a joint statement that the Georgian Dream government has failed to conduct October 31 parliamentary elections in line with democratic standards.
