The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has allocated $500,000 in a grant that will be fully used to develop waste management strategy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi.
“This will be the first step for Tbilisi to gradually move towards the establishment of a segregated waste system, including proper infrastructure, reorganization of trash trucks and the introduction of some financial incentive mechanisms. This will help citizens to start sorting waste on the spot”, said Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi Maia Bitadze.
Tbilisi City Hall informs that consulting services have already been procured. The responsibilities of the consulting company is to study the current situation and to conduct primary waste disposal research.
The consulting company together with the City Hall will develop new methodology for calculating the waste rate, which will eliminate waste management costs and encourage society to start waste sorting.
One of the requirements of the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union is the introduction of a waste management strategy.
