A historical residential house showcasing Tbilisi’s iconic Old Town architectural style has been renovated in a two-year project that aims to preserve the cultural monuments of Georgia’s capital.
The building, located at 9, Kavlashvili Street, is typical of the 19th century Tbilisi residential architecture but had fallen into disrepair with years of neglect.
Commenced by Tbilisi Development Fund, the restoration and reconstruction of the two-storey house was launched in 2016.

The works involved dismantling of the building — which had been categorised as being in critical condition — and reconstructing it using original decorative elements.
The project also saw replacement of communications network, piping and other infrastructure to prepare the house for residence of over a dozen families who had formerly lived in the damaged building.

Around 600,000 GEL (around 230,000 $/192.000€ *) was spent on restoration and reconstruction of the Kavlashvili Street building from the Tbilisi City Hall budget.
Originally built in the first half of the 19th century, the house is located in the Upper Kaloubani district of the Old Town, between Freedom Square and the Mtkvari river bank.

The Fund’s work for restoring it fell within the wider New Tiflis project, launched in 2016.
The project serves to restore, preserve and renovate parts of the capital bearing cultural significance through architecture and historical background.
