Four pharmacy chains have received an additional supply of anti-flu medicine Tamiflu, totalling 800 packages from the Ministry of Health.

The medicine is also distributed in Georgian regions where there are risks of a medication deficit.

The Ministry of Health announced yesterday that it would share its reserves of the medicine with private pharmacy chains as the increased demand for Tamiflu over the last two days has caused a deficit.

When the level of infection decreases, the pharmacies will return the store of Tamiflu back to the ministry.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Health has expanded the list of people who are eligible to get the medicine for free.

“The ministry has been giving away the anti-flu medicine from its storage facilities for free to socially vulnerable people and pregnant people but as we see a deficit in the network we have extended our list to children, retired people, and those with cardiovascular, diabetes,  oncologic and respiratory diseases,” Sergeenko said, adding that those people can receive the drug from public health units all over Georgia.

Citizens can receive information as to which pharmacies hold the medicine by calling the ministry hotline - 15 05.

Sergeenko called on everyone to visit the doctor as soon as they have any symptoms in order to start timely treatment.

The H1N1 virus (swine flu) has caused the death of eight people in Georgia this winter. In most cases belated hospitalisation has been the main reason for death, specialists say.

The symptoms of H1N1 virus are almost the same as the seasonal flu and may involve cough, fever, sore throat, body and headaches and fatigue.
