Levan Zhorzholiani, the Chairman of the Legal Affairs and Human Rights Commission of Tbilisi City Assembly, has called on the international community to “remain vigilant” and “raise its voice” against what he labeled as “alarming developments” in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia.
Zhorzholiani was speaking at a session of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Strasbourg today, and noted the Council needed to take “even more effective steps” to prevent a deterioration of the situation in the occupied regions of Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia.
Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, said at the session Georgia was “another member state” to have experienced Russian aggression, in reference to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine last month.
Burić made the remark to delegates of the The 42nd Plenary Session while reiterating “full support” of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
