Georgia is playing an important role in ensuring peace and security in the South Caucasus region, Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili said on Saturday in comments on the inaugural meeting of his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan in Tbilisi on Saturday.
Darchiashvili highlighted the role of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in the creation of a mediation platform through the regional Peaceful Neighbourhood Initiative, and said the Georgian capital had hosted a “very important” meeting between the two foreign ministers.
He also said through the mediation efforts of Georgia, the talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan had already led to “concrete and tangible” results.

The FM thanked his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts for “trusting” the Georgian Government, and expressed hope that the dialogue would “help achieve peace and stability” in the region.
The European Union supports the “bilateral decision” of Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, to hold their inaugural meeting in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, Toivo Klaar, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, said on Saturday.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan on Saturday discussed the former's Peaceful Neighbourhood Initiative and its role in normalisation of relations in the South Caucasus region, as well as an upcoming meeting between Mirzoyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart in Tbilisi.
The South Caucasus Peaceful Neighbourhood Initiative, a dialogue platform for normalisation of relations in the region and cooperation in mutually beneficial areas of economy, trade and culture was discussed on Saturday in a meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.
Armenia has “always attached great importance” to the development and strengthening of relations with “friendly Georgia”, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Sunday in a congratulatory message to his Georgian counterpart Irakli Garibashvili on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Nikoloz Khatiashvili, the foreign policy researcher of the analytical centre Geocase, on Friday, said Georgia had an opportunity to play an "important role" in promoting stability, security and peace in the South Caucasus region, as well as to strengthen its position as a “regional player”.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Sunday said all three countries of the South Caucasus region - Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia - had to solve their regional and development issues “by themselves”.
