A European Union public service twinning project for the Georgian National Agency for Standards and Metrology has launched in Georgia, the Economy Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The Ministry said the project - entitled Strengthening the Institutional and Human Capacity of the Georgian National Agency for Standards and Metrology - would seek to bring the local legal framework in the field of metrology and standardisation closer to EU regulations and develop the capacity of the Agency to increase both the quantity and quality of its services.

During the presentation earlier today, Genadi Arveladze, the Deputy Economy Minister, said the project would facilitate the process of “economic rapprochement” of Georgia with the EU, noting the importance of a “smooth operation” of the system to fully integrate the Georgian economy.

It will assist in the institutional development of the Standards and Metrology Agency and the training of specialists, which, in turn, will significantly increase the number of services that the Agency is able to provide,” Arveladze said.

He also pointed out the twinning project would assist the country to meet the requirements of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area signed between Georgia and the EU in 2014 as part of the Association Agreement between them.

Set to run over the next 24 months, the project will be supported by the Italian Institute of Metrology, the Italian Standardisation Authority, and the Spanish Association for Standardisation. The institutions will assist the Georgian Agency in implementing the requirements of the DCFTA in terms of strengthening the administrative, human and technical capacity of the body, the Ministry said.
