Ongoing reforms and future plans for the development of the energy sector of Georgia were in focus of a meeting between the Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili and representatives of Energy Community (EC), an organisation established between the European Union and a number of eastern and southern European states, on Thursday.
Following the meeting, Davitashvili said Georgia was going to prepare an energy and climate strategy project, which he called a “fundamental document” for the development of the sector in the country.
The Ministry also said Davitashvili had noted once this plan was approved, it would be in “full harmony” with “European principles and approaches.”
Georgia’s Economy Minister has presented a clear vision for the development of the energy and climate sectors in Georgia, which is much appreciated. […] It is necessary for Georgia to be a partner in the processes developed by the energy community,” Artur Lorkovsky, the Director of Energy Community, said following the meeting.
Lorkovsky also said the plan was “based on the principles that are strictly in line with the Energy Community Treaty, based on openness, competitive market and decarbonisation.”
Energy Community is an international organisation and an initiative of the EU that seeks to extend the Union’s internal energy market to South-East Europe and beyond, and to establish a more homogenous and unified energy system across the continent.
Georgia joined the EU energy union in 2017.
