Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili has reached a new milestone in his career after taking the. 16th spot on the Association of Tennis Professionals world rankings this week.
This comes after defeating French rivals Tristan Lamasine and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Lyon, France, during the ATP 250 clay-court tournament and winning €501,345 in prize money.
The top-seeded Georgian avenged his 2017 semi-final loss to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga with a 6-4, 6-4 win in 82 minutes at the ATP 250 clay-court tournament. Former champion Tsonga took a 2-0 lead, but the momentum soon swung in the favour of Basilashvili, who is through to a semi-final for the first time since winning the China Open in October 2018,” the official webpage of the tournament reads.
In July 2018 Basilashvili, 27, made it into the main draw of the German Open in Hamburg as a qualifier and went on to win the tournament, defeating Leonardo Mayer in the final and becoming the first Georgian player ever to win the ATP tournament.
In October 2018, Basilashvili won his second ATP title at the China Open by defeating world No. 4 Juan Martín del Potro in the final match.
He achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 17 on 1 April 2019.
