Tornike Rijvadze, the Chairman of the Government of the western Georgian region of Adjara, on Friday said the number of domestic and international visits to the region had exceeded 4.6 million last year in a 20 percent increase compared to 2022.

Rijvadze said national revenues from tourism had exceeded $4 billion, with the region contributing to its increase with more than a third of the overall number, and added the regional Government planned to increase the number of visits to the region at least to 6 million.

The recognitions we have from international organisations, as well as leading travel portals and visitor surveys, are part of an overall marketing campaign in a very competitive industry”, he said.

The sports infrastructure is really impressive. Batumi football stadium has hosted many international events, such as the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, the [Championship] final and rugby matches [...], which is very important for the development of tourism”, the official added.

The regional Government said the number of visits and flights to Batumi International Airport had also increased in 2023, adding the data of the first quarter of this year also showed an increased number of visits made by foreign visitors to the region.

The body said 363,021 tourist visits had been recorded in Adjara this year between January and March, which was +8.7 percent more than the same period last year, and marked a +44.2 percent increase compared to 2019.

It also noted “many recognitions and awards” won by the region, such as European Best Destinations, a travel platform developed to promote culture and tourism in Europe, naming Batumi among its best places to invest and fifth among best places to travel.

Batumi was also named among the top 10 summer vacation destinations around the world by the British online newspaper The Independent, with the city’s football stadium receiving a prize promoted as a “real estate Oscar” at the FIABCI-Georgia Prix d’Excellence Awards, organised by the national branch of the International Real Estate Federation.
