German embassy urges Russia, de facto gov’t of Tskhinvali to recall why Berlin Wall collapsed

The German Embassy to Georgia has stated that ‘borders which are based on inhumanity will never last long,’ urging Russia and its controlled de facto government of Tskhinvali to recall why the Berlin Wall collapsed.
With the statement the embassy has responded to the closure of so-called borders with Tskhinvali starting in early September, creating severe humanitarian situation on the ground.
Even in the case of urgent need of medical care the de facto authorities of Tskhinvali do not allow locals to cross the so-called border,” the embassy said.
The de facto Tskhinvali government says that they will reopen the crossing points as soon as Tbilisi removes the police post from the village of Chorchana, Khashuri municipality, which is located on the Tbilisi-controlled territory.
State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality of Georgia Ketevan Tsikhelashvil ihas criticised the de-facto leadership of Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) for their decision to close the so-called border with the rest of Georgia to avoid the spread of H1N1 flu.

60-year-old woman Tamar Gigauri fell into a well of seven meters deep in Georgia’s Russian- occupied Akhalgori district yesterday, but the Tskhinvali occupation regime is not allowing her family to transfer the woman to a Tbilisi hospital. Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, Georgian Minister of Reconciliation and Civil Equality, urged all decision-making bodies to guide by humanitarian principles and not to endanger the health of the injured woman from Akhalgori region.
EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell says that the death of 70-year-old Margo Martiashvili, who suffered a stroke in the Russian-occupied Akhalgori district and was unable to be transported to the Tbilisi-administered territory because of the closed “checkpoints” with Tskhinvali, is “tragic, and we are doing our best for the crossing points to be reopened.”
The Democracy Research Institute NGO, chaired by former Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili, has reported the death of 49-year-old Georgian citizen B.K. in Akhalgori [under Russian control] hospital due to closed crossing points with the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili attended the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. At the reception she said that “Germany shows us that unifying our country and ending the occupation is possible”.
