Opposition member detained for insulting police on inauguration day

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has detained a member of the United National Movement opposition, former state official David Kirkitadze for verbally and physically abusing the police and damage of property during the clash between law enforcers and opposition activists on the presidential inauguration day.

If confirmed, the former UNM lawmaker and Tbilisi City Hall official, will have to spend 4-7 years in prison.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs released the video which show how Kirkitadze abuses a policeman. 

Commenting on the charge Kirkitadze said that “dictatorship, Russian-style dictatorship is being established in the country”.

Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Natia Mezvrishvili says that the videos taken on the day show “very clearly” how Kirkitadze violated the law and abused the police.

Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia thanked police today for showing restraint and apologised to them as several policemen received injuries during the clash.

He vowed that everyone, no matter of their political or other status, will be held accountable for abusing the police staff.
