The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office has released a statement on the audio recordings broadcast by Rustavi 2 TV channel yesterday related to the high-profile Khorava Street Murder case, in which a currently detained former official of the prosecutor’s office says that he has “serious compromising materials” against the Georgian Dream leadership.

In the recordings Mirza Subeliani, who was detained in June for not reporting the teenagers’ murder case in December 2017, says that he, as a former top  employee of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office, has information which may cause serious harm to the current state leadership.

Rustavi 2 reports Subeliani is angry with the Georgian Dream leadership as they “have not helped him as much as needed”. In the recording, Subeliani speaks with supposed representatives of the Georgian Dream party and tells them that the government must be afraid of him as he has materials against them.

In the recordings Subeliani also says that he “has a deal” with the government for his prison term.

The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office stated at a special briefing today that they had begun an investigation regarding the recordings before they were released by the opposition-minded TV channel.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that an employee of the Ministry of Corrections gave them the recordings.

The individual told us that an unidentified person handed him the recordings and threatened him to release them, otherwise he would make videos of his personal life available to public,” the Prosecutor’s Office said.

The office says that they have more audio recordings than the TV channel released.

The recordings need to be checked for their authenticity,” the Prosecutor’s Office says and added  that there may have been a group which staged such recordings to release them in the future.

Two 16-year-old boys were stabbed on Khorava Street on 1 December 2016. One died immediately, while another died at the hospital next day.

The father of one of the murdered boys claims that Subeliani presented obstacles to prevent a fair investigation into the murder from taking place because one of his underage relatives was allegedly involved.

Subeliani only admits to having failed to report the crime.
